William Humphries III, M.D., MPH

William E. Humphries, III, MD, MPH, is a board-certified neurosurgeon and joined the WellStar Health System in the Neurosurgery Division after serving as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Neurological Surgery at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. Dr. Humphries specializes in cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery and his clinical interests include acute ischemic stroke, cervical and intracranial atherosclerotic disease, carotid artery stenting, carotid endarterectomy, subarachnoid hemorrhage, surgical and endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms, intracranial vasospasm, vascular malformations of the brain and spine, moyamoya disease, and neurovascular trauma.
In addition to his clinical roles, Dr. Humphries also serves as the Neurovascular Service Line Director for Kennestone Hospital within the WellStar Health System and is responsible for implementing and overseeing the operational and strategic initiatives for the Neurovascular Service. He also serves as the Chief of the Quality and Value Infrastructure for the Neuroscience Division. Dr. Humphries is currently enrolled at Duke University in the executive MBA program in the Fuqua School of Business with a focus on health sector management.
Dr. Humphries is a Georgia native and attended high school as well as college in the Atlanta area. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Morehouse College with academic and music scholarships and graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in Biology. He went on to obtain his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in 2006. During his medical school matriculation, he also obtained an MPH in Epidemiology from The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dr. Humphries completed his neurosurgical residency training in the Texas Medical Center at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX and was the first African American to graduate from the training program. Afterwards, he completed a combined fellowship in cerebrovascular/endovascular neurosurgery at the Semmes-Murphey Neurologic and Spine Institute in Memphis, Tennessee.
Dr. Humphries is passionate about exploring mechanisms to improve how large health care systems deliver care at scale, improving disparity outcomes in health care by using data driven and economic strategies to address social determinants of health, and increasing access to medical education. He has spoken on numerous platforms and was recently featured as a speaker on Right Now Media.
