Every now and then, we will get a question that makes us press mute and provide some clarification. We’ve tempered the fear with truth and the uncertainty with hugs and reassurance. For months we’ve been hearing about a vaccine and all of the questions that followed. When will it be ready? Who will get it first? Who SHOULD get it first?

I am a neurooncologist. That means on a regular basis I tell people the worst news they are going to hear in their lives. I sit with them through the trauma of hearing they have a brain cancer that cannot be cured and will likely lead to their death in the near future. I hold space for them to share whatever comes next. For some there are tears. For others, I am met with anger. Some are in this state of disbelief, unable to comprehend what I have just said. They often ask, what did I do to cause this? What will happen as a result?

Read MoreWe have committed to giving $100,000 in scholarship support to medical students from underrepresented backgrounds in 2020 to be applied to tuition costs for the 2020-2021academic year. Thirty students from our 10 partner institutions are currently undergoing the application and selection process.
